In Pursuit of Greatness

In Pursuit of Greatness

Live
It has been such a long time since I updated my blog. I confess, somewhere along my blogging journey, I have forgotten my original intention. When I started tracking how many visitors I get a day, and how much I earn from google adsense, blogging became one of the most boring things in my life.  This blog is supposed to be my emotional outlet and it is supposed to be a virtual corner that I retrieve to. Instead, writing a blog becomes another chore. The problem is that I started caring... A whole year has passed since I wrote my last word on this blog, and so many things have happened since then. Sometimes, it does not feel like it has only been a year, but decades. The direction of…

Jingju at Swansea

Jingju at Swansea

Live, Travel
This time, I was invited to perform at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea. This was the first time I visited Wales, and the furtherest I have travelled for performance. Swansea is a nice little seaside city, having its own history and unique characters. Although we did not get a chance to tour around much, except a morning walk along the beach, we were charmed by it. It was very nice to get out of London, and have a breath of the fresh seaside air. During our morning walk, we encountered many lovely dogs, their running silhouettes against the bright sunlight and the glistening sea, the sight was really as if popping out of a painting. Jingju: Brangwyn Hall It has been quite a while since I have performed this piece of…

Affirmation Statement

Affirmation Statement

Live
From this moment on I commit 100% to my personal development and every aspect of my life. I know all the obstacles and difficulties are only temporary, in fact they are essential for me to become a better person, the person I want to be.   Health From this moment, I commit to take care of myself, which starts from my health. I will do so by putting food with high nutritional value into my mouth (such as lean meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, and nuts). I will value more of the food quality, rather than the taste. Physical exercise is crucial for me to achieve good health. I will commit to at least 30 minutes of physical exercise every day. This may be hard, but any pain or discomfort…

Cotton X Bud: a love story

Cotton X Bud: a love story

Cotton, Live
Before I met you, I often spent a long time staring into empty space, pondering what life is all about. Life to me was just life: ordinary, boring and repetitive. Everyday was the same: eating, sleeping, jumping around. Maybe that was it, that was my life. The whole room and everything in it were mine. I was somewhat content? Yet, a small part of me was missing. I wondered what and I wondered why. The first time you entered into my life, I was nervous and uneasy. You put your little paws upon my shoulder, I flinched and retreated back into a corner. 'Out, I said', I didn't want you intruding into my space. Maybe I have been alone for too long... In the following days, you kept coming up…

Maidstone 2017: the last Kunqu performance…

Art, Live
Performing Chinese opera has become our annual ritual. It is the only time of the year, we get asked by people to deliver a show. We used to do some in the summer too, yet as the funding for art has been running low, the opportunities to perform in the summer have also gotten less and less. I have participated in Maidstone Festival for four years consecutively since 2014, sharing our culture and art to local communities. 2018 is the first year there was no funding to continue such an event. This performance was from 2017, the last one we did for Maidstone... Lion Dance Before we took onto the stage, lions danced their way to the stage. These are Southern lions, as oppose to the Northern lions I previously…

Camera Story

Live
I was fascinated by cameras from quite a young age. Back then, when I was still in China, owning a camera was very special. You had to be the trend setter and had a bit of money to have a camera. I always remembered my dad had an Olympus camera, which he bought from Japan. It was a point-and-shoot film camera, but it was already quite advanced at the time, that we could adjust the time and date, and the films could be rolled up automatically once finished. We called the camera ‘傻瓜相机’, which has the literal translation ‘fool’s camera’. Well, it was supposed to mean the camera was so high tech, it was fool-proof.           Those film cameras provided such…

New Chapter, new question: Can style be learned?

New Chapter, new question: Can style be learned?

Art, Live, London
Over the holiday season, I got to relax a little and caught up with some missed sleep. So as a consequence, my brain started working properly again and started asking questions. I watched several documentaries of various designers, not just for the pleasure of seeing intricate and beautiful pieces they had created, but I get to learn the amount of work went through to make those clothes and the journey a fashion designer went through. I felt the clothes they made are, in fact, a reflection of themselves, their memories, emotions and beliefs. So if the clothes are a reflection of our inner selves. What and how I am being reflected? It turns out, I probably do not understand myself as much as I thought. Or perhaps, indeed, we are…

Jingju Backstage, Sadler’s Well

Art, Live, London
This is the third time in a row, China National Beijing Opera Company came to London. I have been diligently following the shows throughout the three years, and have always considered the performances a treat for my birthday. This year again, I was very privileged to be at the backstage watching the operas, and this time in Sadler's Well. There is always something very magical about watching the opera backstage. Perhaps, it is the light. Or perhaps, I get to see the more complex side of preparation for the performance, where everything becomes more dynamic. It was as if, the actual performance is only the tip of the iceberg, and I had the chance to see the rest. Everything to me here was art, fine art. There were numerous props…

Hair by Fairy: I have gone Blonde (Neal’s Yard Part 2)

Hair by Fairy: I have gone Blonde (Neal’s Yard Part 2)

Live, Other
Warning: long article... What? Am I being serious? Not completely blonde, I just had an ombre. Well, dip dye has always been on my bucket list. Yet, I always said no, as I just thought the look probably wouldn’t look very professional for what I do. A spur of moment, I decided to have my hair dyed in the Hair by Fairies. It was quite a risky move, could turn out to be horribly wrong.   When I arrived home. My boyfriend looked so shocked, and the first thing that came out his mouth was, ‘are you breaking up with me?’. I was rather amused by the comment, he thought I was going through some personal crisis. Apparently, according to him, this is what people do, when they want a…
