Cotton X Bud: a love story

Cotton X Bud: a love story

Cotton, Live
Before I met you, I often spent a long time staring into empty space, pondering what life is all about. Life to me was just life: ordinary, boring and repetitive. Everyday was the same: eating, sleeping, jumping around. Maybe that was it, that was my life. The whole room and everything in it were mine. I was somewhat content? Yet, a small part of me was missing. I wondered what and I wondered why. The first time you entered into my life, I was nervous and uneasy. You put your little paws upon my shoulder, I flinched and retreated back into a corner. 'Out, I said', I didn't want you intruding into my space. Maybe I have been alone for too long... In the following days, you kept coming up…

Maidstone 2017: the last Kunqu performance…

Art, Live
Performing Chinese opera has become our annual ritual. It is the only time of the year, we get asked by people to deliver a show. We used to do some in the summer too, yet as the funding for art has been running low, the opportunities to perform in the summer have also gotten less and less. I have participated in Maidstone Festival for four years consecutively since 2014, sharing our culture and art to local communities. 2018 is the first year there was no funding to continue such an event. This performance was from 2017, the last one we did for Maidstone... Lion Dance Before we took onto the stage, lions danced their way to the stage. These are Southern lions, as oppose to the Northern lions I previously…

Jingju Backstage, Sadler’s Well

Art, Live, London
This is the third time in a row, China National Beijing Opera Company came to London. I have been diligently following the shows throughout the three years, and have always considered the performances a treat for my birthday. This year again, I was very privileged to be at the backstage watching the operas, and this time in Sadler's Well. There is always something very magical about watching the opera backstage. Perhaps, it is the light. Or perhaps, I get to see the more complex side of preparation for the performance, where everything becomes more dynamic. It was as if, the actual performance is only the tip of the iceberg, and I had the chance to see the rest. Everything to me here was art, fine art. There were numerous props…

Hair by Fairy: I have gone Blonde (Neal’s Yard Part 2)

Live, Other
Warning: long article... What? Am I being serious? Not completely blonde, I just had an ombre. Well, dip dye has always been on my bucket list. Yet, I always said no, as I just thought the look probably wouldn’t look very professional for what I do. A spur of moment, I decided to have my hair dyed in the Hair by Fairies. It was quite a risky move, could turn out to be horribly wrong.   When I arrived home. My boyfriend looked so shocked, and the first thing that came out his mouth was, ‘are you breaking up with me?’. I was rather amused by the comment, he thought I was going through some personal crisis. Apparently, according to him, this is what people do, when they want a…

Wisdom from My Mother

Wisdom from My Mother

Live
My mum has always been a very strong person to me, my role model and inspiration. She is my parent, my mentor and my friend. Even with the worst things happening to me, she always lifts me up. Even when I lose faith in myself, she never loses faith in me. I talk to her nearly every day, and I am always amazed how much wisdom she has. This is what she said to me and I would like to share. "You are now on your own, we cannot do much for you anymore, apart from being morally supportive and to be someone you talk to. You have to do things by yourself..."   "Have faith in yourself, even when other people lose faith in you"   "You can lose anything,…

Six months of blogging Six months ago, I started this blog. Over this short period, I have gained things beyond monetary values. I have learned more about web development, digital marketing and content management. Then, there are things I would not have tried if I were not having this blog: I would not have gone to the Mozfest, which got me interested in learning more about technology, and I certainly would not have attended the London Pure trade show. Cotton is definitely the inspiration of this blog. Without her joining our life, I would not have started this blog at all. Yet, it would be unfair to say the website is solely about Cotton. On several occasions, people have asked me what this blog is about. Food? Rabbit? Life? I have…

Susan Fowler and Uber The sexual harassment investigation of Uber has been a major headline. It all started after Susan Fowler, a former Uber reliability engineer posted on her blog, detailing her one year of experience working for Uber. Fowler stated that she was harassed by inappropriate chat messages from a senior manager. When she took the case to the Human Resources (HR), she was informed that it was the first offence of the manager, and suggested that Fowler may receive a negative review because she has voiced her opinion. Yet, later on, Fowler found out that many women who worked for Uber received the same treatment. Fowler’s post received numerous support world-wide. This post has been named as the second biggest news since Ellen Pao (although controversial) took on Silicon…

How to Read More Books

Live
Books played a huge part in my life. When I first received my library card as a teenager, it felt like the ticket to adulthood. I used to immerse myself in ancient mythology and fantasies. English isn't my native language, so books were also crucial in getting me up to the same level as my peers. I loved book clubs, and reading was a sanctuary for me whenever I felt a bit down. All the stories, and beautiful verses provided an alternative reality. Surely, you must also remember a day when you had cool lemonade on one hand, and a book on the other... Slowly coming to the adulthood, heavy workload and busy schedules often prevent us from reading books. Plus the information overload from the internet left those traditional…

London: loneliness among the crowd

London: loneliness among the crowd

Live
Six years, I have been living in this magical city. I have transformed from a country bumpkin to somewhat of a Londoner. Food, theatres, drinks and fashion, London has so much to offer, and endless things to explore. London, so many people, so many things to do, so diverse. Yet, it was not just once I heard someone telling me that they felt lonely. I was the same, there was a period, I felt so suffocated by the stuffiness of London: overcrowded underground, overhyped hipster culture and sky-high rental price. Me too, desired to get out of London. So many people, yet so lonely. That was the feeling. It was only until recently, I finally found my emotional anchor, and fell in love with London, head over heels again. The…
